Big, big news – fast-food workers are going on STRIKE on November 10

Friend,
Big, big news – fast-food workers are going on STRIKE on November 10.
The California Labor Federation is standing with them. Sign up now to join us.
We’re sick and tired of a country where people can work hard all day and still not making enough to pay rent or feed their families.
We need $15 an hour and union rights NOW.
Will you join us?
When we come together, we win. We won in New York, we won in LA, we won in Seattle and we won San Francisco.
Now, it’s time to take it to the next level.
Help us send the message to McDonald’s and all the other big fast food companies: We need $15 an hour and union rights NOW!
Thanks for standing with us.
In solidarity,

Solano County Workers Strike over Unfair Labor Practices, 2,000 March in Solidarity

Nearly 1,800 workers from across Solano County went on strike this week in protest of repeated violations of the law by County executives at the bargaining table.
The workers are represented by SEIU Local 1021, and are protesting the County’s failure to engage in a good faith bargaining process. Other sticking issues include intimidation of workers and the County’s refusal to respond to union proposals over safety standards and the county’s legal obligations.
Carmen Curry, a social worker, explained that, “When the Board of Supervisors and County Executives commit unfair labor practices, it hurts nurses, fire fighters, police officers, public service workers and the communities we serve. We’re taking a stand and reminding the Board and County Executives that they’re not above the law.”
Follow SEIU Local 1021 on Facebook and Twitter for breaking news on Solano County workers.

Next Wednesday in SoCal: Stand with El Super Workers

Will you be in Southern California on Wednesday? Great opportunity to show solidarity with workers who need it in Paramount!
El Super workers have been struggling for 3 years to win respect and a fair union contract. As a part of its settlement agreement with the U.S. government, El Super agreed to return to the bargaining table on August 18, 2015 - after more than a year of steadfast refusal to negotiate. However, progress has been slow and the company has not agreed to address any of these workers priorities.
These workers have courageously stood together to win basic, "industry-standard" improvements in their working conditions. They are seeking enough paid sick days so they are not forced to handle their community’s food while sick, more guaranteed hours so their paychecks translate into a decent living standard, better pay, and above all, the company’s respect.
JOIN EL SUPER WORKERS TO KEEP THE PRESSURE ON EL SUPER TO WIN RESPECT AND A FAIR CONTRACT!!!
WHEN: Wednesday, October 28 @ 1 pm
WHO: El Super workers, UFCW, Coalition for a Better El Super leaders and community supporters
WHAT: Mobilization to EL Super Corporate Headquarters
WHERE: El Super (Bodega Latina Corp) Headquarters, 14601 Lakewood Blvd, Paramount, CA 90723
Thank you for your continued support. Please RSVP to Jean Tong, UFCW Local 770: jean.tong@ufcw770.org

Coalition of Labor Union Women to take on “War on Women” at Convention:November 18-21st in Sacramento

Do you want women to have a voice at work?

Art Pulaski: Governor Should Sign AB 465 to Protect Workers

ICYMI: The clock is ticking on Governor Jerry Brown’s deadline to decide which bills from this legislative session he’ll sign into law. A bill promising to curtail a practice that’s both harmful to workers and disturbingly on the rise in workplaces across California is more than worthy of his signature. Mandatory arbitration waivers have been sneaked into countless piles of paperwork for workers to unknowingly sign their rights away on the job or when they’re first hired.
In a Sacramento Bee op-ed, California Labor Federation executive secretary-treasurer Art Pulaski describes how these waivers have been used to rob workers of their right to justice:
You can read the full op-ed here: laborfed.ca/1OGpv4g
If you’ve ever signed a job application, you’re familiar with the overly technical fine print. What you may not know is an arbitration agreement hidden in the fine print nullifies your rights to seek justice in a court of law if your boss sexually harasses you, cheats you out of pay or commits a host of other abuses.
Sign the job application, lose your rights – most often without even knowing it.
In workplaces across California, this scheme is becoming more commonplace. Big corporations such as the one that owns Pizza Hut are including an agreement that, if signed, binds the employee to the employer’s rigged arbitration system for virtually all disputes. It’s called forced arbitration because workers don’t have a choice in the matter if they want a job.
Please tweet about it if you can and post to Facebook. Here's some sample tweets:
  • No one should have to sign away their rights on the job. Gov Brown: sign #AB465 to protect workers in CA laborfed.ca/1OGpv4g
  • .@ArtPulaski in @sacbee_news: Forced arbitration hurts workers in CA, Gov Brown should sign common-sense #AB465 laborfed.ca/1OGpv4g
  • "You should never be forced to sign away your rights as a condition of a job" @ArtPulaski in @sacbee_news #AB465 laborfed.ca/1OGpv4g
  • MUST READ @ArtPulaski in @sacbee_news: #AB465 is much needed, common-sense reform to protect workers across CA laborfed.ca/1OGpv4g

Stand with El Super Workers like Lydia

Next week in SoCal: stand with El Super workers like Lydia Flores who have been fighting for more than 2 years for a fair contract!
WHAT: EL SUPER WORKERS SICK DAY ACTION
WHERE: 9710 Woodman Ave, Arleta, CA 91331
WHEN: OCTOBER 7th at 10am
Can't make it on Wednesday? Follow Justice for El Super workers on Facebook to stay updated!
From Lydia:
My name is Lydia Flores and I am a 37-year old single mother of three. I work as a cashier at El Super #12 - a grocery store in Arleta, CA. My unionized sisters and brothers at El Super and I have been fighting to win a fair union contract for more than two years. El Super has responded with a concerted effort to deny us the fair working conditions and respect we all deserve.
First, I want to thank all of you who supported us on September 25 - where we commemorated our two-year fight for a fair contract with a demonstration at El Super #17 in South Los Angeles.
Your solidarity shows us that we are not alone in our struggle, and inspires the confidence that we are going to WIN.
I want to ask you to join my co-workers and I at El Super #12 at my store in Arleta on Wednesday, October 7. We will be rallying in support of our negotiating demand for adequate paid sick leave. Winning a good sick leave policy would enable me to care for myself, or a sick child, without worrying about not being able to pay my rent because I lost a day’s pay. I know our loyal customers would rather that I did not go work and check out their food while I am sick.
El Super is trying to tire us all out by dragging its feet at the bargaining table. But I know I am fighting for my children’s future and the future of my community. I hope you will join me on October 7.

Shameful: Workers allege 80-hour weeks with no overtime at UC Berkeley sporting events

The US Department of Labor is investigating serious allegations on behalf of workers who were hired by a contractor to provide essential services like cleaning, landscaping, and security to the University of California. This week the LA Times exposed horrendous workplace conditions and expectations placed on workers including:
  • Denying overtime pay for weeks that stretched to 80 or 90 hours
  • 16 hour days without overtime pay
  • 6 a.m. to 9 p.m shifts without lunch breaks, hauling trash and recycling bins before, during, and after UC games.
You can read the full story in the LA Times here.Share with friends and family on social media, if you can!

Apprenticeship Program for Veterans kicks off in LA!

As part of labor's initiative to expand apprenticeship opportunities in the building trades for post 9/11 veterans, the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association of Sheet, Metal, Air, Rail & Transportation Local 105 hosted an orientation before their pre-apprenticeship program begins next week! Through this program, veterans will gain direct-entry into a career as a Union Sheet Metal Worker and will learn skills such as sheet metal work, fabrication, installation, and shipbuilding.
Through the collective effort of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, United Way of Greater Los Angeles, the Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council, and Helmets to Hardhats, we have been able to create an initiative that capitalizes on the skills veterans have to help them thrive in an economy that depends on building and construction trades.

Higher Union Density Benefits both Workers and Children according to new study

There are countless studies establishing the benefits of union membership for workers but a recent study shows unions may have a positive effect on children, too.
This week the New York Times highlighted a new study suggesting regions with high union density are related to upward economic mobility for workers and children.
Higher rates of unionization may give rise to certain norms that instill a greater sense of agency in workers.
For example, people who belong to unions are generally aware that they have certain rights in the workplace and are encouraged to speak up if they believe they’ve been mistreated. It’s the kind of norm that could leach out into a broader population — to both union members and their nonunion peers — if unions are sufficiently visible and active, which could in turn help boost economic mobility.
Read more about this fascinating study here and share with your friends and family!

Workers Fight Back Against Walmart

Back in April, Walmart closed several stores including the Pico Rivera location in Southern California. At the time Walmart cited blamed the closures the stores on "plumbing issues". It just so happens those stores had workers who were standing together and organizing. Now those workers are bravely calling out Walmart with a complaint to the National Labor Relations Board.
...the unions claim that Wal-Mart had not offered to transfer the most vocal of the workers at the Pico Rivera store, a retaliation that it says is in violation of U.S. labor law.
"Wal-Mart has furthermore indicated that it will not rehire those employees who stood up and engaged in protected concerted activity when the Pico Rivera store reopens," the labor groups wrote in the complaint.
You can support workers by signing their petition calling for the reinstatement of workers at bit.ly/StandWithPico.

We can't let them continue to dehumanize us.

Friend,
Labor Day is around the corner and there are millions of workers in California to celebrate. What can I say? We need your help.

For decades attacks on labor have glossed over the workers who make up a union. We know this strategy helps corporate CEOs and those who continue to benefit from a shrinking middle class. We can't let them continue to dehumanize us. It's time to fight back and put a human face on workers in California!

With Labor Day around the corner, we've been spotlighting union workers with the Faces of Labor project to celebrate workers and remind folks what a union really is: workers standing together.
We know there are people in your life who work hard everyday and deserve to be celebrated, too.  So we wanted to take this opportunity to invite you to participate in the Faces of Labor project - and there are two ways to join in on the celebration:
Join the Faces of Labor project and turn it into a MOVEMENT:

Dedicate a Facebook post or a Tweet to a worker in your life.

Thank them for the work they do and tell the world why they should also be grateful for this worker - the more descriptive the better! If you know what union they are a member of (or are organizing with), feel free to include that info. Share a photo if you think the worker would be comfortable with it. Repeat: feel free to thank as many workers as you want!

IMPORTANT: Use the #FacesOfLabor hashtag on both Facebook and Twitter so we can like and share with our community, too.

EXAMPLE: [what I would say about my dad]
"My dad always said to me growing up: 'if you're going to do a job, make sure you do it well'. Thanks Dad for always modeling a strong work ethic. I know you brought that same dedication to your hard work as a journeyman steamfitter and every building you helped raise in the Bay Area is safer for it. #FacesOfLabor"  And I'd post a picture of my dad and I, tag him and his union.

Show pride in your union
Dedicate a Facebook post or a Tweet to tell your friends and family why you're proud of your union. Share a photo if you're comfortable with it.
IMPORTANT: Use the #FacesOfLabor hashtag so we can like and share with our community, too.
EXAMPLE: Check out the post of Rajali Walker with his daughter below. Rajali praised unions in general but also feel free to get specific about the work you do and/or why your union has improved your life.
Can't wait to see all of your posts in the coming weeks!
In solidarity,

STOP BIG CORPORATIONS FROM CHEATING WORKERS’ OUT OF BASIC RIGHTS!

Friend,
The California Labor Movement has worked to pass strong worker protection laws, but those laws are worthless if they can’t be enforced. Today, many corporations are cheating workers by forcing them to sign arbitration agreements that effectively erase basic worker protections.
These agreements prevent workers who are cheated out of pay or sexually harassed, for example, from taking the employer to either the Labor Commissioner or court, instead forcing workers into a rigged arbitration system that’s paid for by the boss.
Worse yet, most workers don’t even know they’ve signed away their rights because the boss doesn’t tell them what they’re signing! There’s currently no requirement that these waivers be translated into a language the worker can understand. In many instances, low-wage immigrant workers are being forced to sign documents they cannot read or understand, or else be fired. And these waivers can be in small, fine print. Workers do not even necessarily have to sign the waiver itself. The waiver can be in buried in a handbook or manual!
No worker should unknowingly lose her rights in the fine print. AB 465 would require that any waiver of labor rights by workers be knowing and voluntary. It would prohibit corporate bosses from making workers sign these rigged agreements as a condition of employment. It would also prohibit bosses from threatening, retaliating, or discriminating against workers for refusing to sign such a waiver.
In solidarity,
Rachel
