Chile's Calbuco volcano erupted Wednesday

Chile's Calbuco volcano erupted Wednesday for the first time in more than 42 years, billowing a huge ash cloud over the mountainous region.

Residents in nearby towns were evacuated because of the volcanic activity.

The 6,500-foot Calbuco volcano last erupted in 1972 and is considered one of the most potentially dangerous among Chile’s 90 active volcanos.

Time-lapse video footage showed an ash cloud forming as the volcano erupted.
