Senate Bill 788 would close that loophole and fully protect the coast from new oil drilling
Dear Friend,
The coastal oil spill on May 19 in Santa Barbara County highlighted how destructive any oil spill can be, and also demonstrated why most Californians oppose expanding offshore oil drilling. More than 20,000 gallons of oil fouled the beach and ocean, created a nine-mile-long oil slick, killed wildlife and polluted water and air. One way to make sure another devastating spill doesn't occur on our California coast is to support Senate Bill 788. This bill will close a legal loophole that would allow new oil drilling to occur in certain sensitive parts of California's ocean waters, including the Tranquillon Ridge off the Santa Barbara coast. SB 788 will come up for a Senate vote on Wednesday. Call your state senator and urge a "Yes" vote on SB 788 to stop new ocean oil drilling. Tranquillon Ridge is part of one of the most biologically diverse ocean environments in the world. Since 2003, oil companies have been pursuing a plan to exploit a legal loophole and drill the offshore area through techniques that involve slant drilling from onshore at Vandenberg Air Force Base out to the ridge. Senate Bill 788 would close that loophole and fully protect the coast from new oil drilling. Help stop this new ocean oil drilling plan. A loophole in the law must not allow California's coast to be put at greater risk by oil drilling.
