For the past five years, the Afghan government has unsuccessfully sought a peace deal with the Taliban. Recent talks indicate that the new government is renewing its dedication to resolving the conflict, but achieving peace is only possible if the Afghan people feel ownership of the solution. Without meaningful inclusion, the agreement won’t be worth the paper it’s printed on.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Draft Bills Feature Language on Women’s Inclusion
Through the support of champions in Congress, Inclusive Security Action secured language in the US House of Representatives’ and Senate’s draft State and Foreign Operations funding bills for fiscal year 2016. If passed by the full House and Senate, the bills will provide funding for the recruitment and retention of women in Pakistan’s police forces and support women’s inclusion in peace processes in South Sudan, Syria, and Afghanistan.

ADVOCATES IN ACTION
- Michelle Barsa attended a Regional Summit on Countering Violent Extremism hosted by the Kenyan government in Nairobi.
- Jacqueline O’Neill and Allison Peters participated in an expert dialogue on “Just and Sustainable Security Responses to Violent Extremism” hosted by the US Institute of Peace and Saferworld.
- Jacqueline O’Neill also participated in a discussion about how multilateral systems—such as the UN—need to adapt to a changing world, hosted by the Independent Commission on Multilateralism.
