Discussion Assignment 2 , Due Thursday, March 13, 2014
Okay.
SO YOU NEED IMAGES and SOUNDS for YOUR PROJECT.
As you search for possible images to use in your assignments and exercises, please pay particular attention to ALL copyright laws and regulations. You may use only those images that are free of any copyright or, if you choose to use images from resources such as Getty Images or iStockPhoto, the appropriate fees are paid for their use.
©
^ This is the copyright symbol. It identifies and legally protects your creative, tangible work from reproduction or use without your permission.
BUT even without a copyright symbol, any work that is not your own is, by law, still protected from reproduction or use without permission.
PART 1 of 3
Please READ this IMAGE RESOURCE and COPYRIGHT INFO and the Links.
Yes. There will be a QUIZ next week. And a Stock Resource Research Discussion Assignment. You will be grateful later. Well, most of you will be grateful.
What is Copyright?
Copyright is a legal form of protection for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression, allowing only the creator to own, share, display, perform, change or distribute what was created.
For example, if you create a song, you own the music and lyrics to that song. If you create an image, film or video, or write a book or blog, you own what you have created. No one else can use or reproduce your work without permission and/or compen$ation.

Copyright law can also prevent you from legally using any work that is not your own without permission.
But there are Exceptions.
Copyright laws give creators the right to be compensated for the use of their work, as well as the ability to control many uses of their works. However, those rights are limited in time and scope, in order to ensure that the public is able to access and re-use creative works in new and interesting ways. Thus, while copyright is often discussed in terms of restrictions, there are aspects of the law that facilitate the rights and freedoms of (re)use, as well as those of the original creators.
These permissive aspects of copyright law include:
1) The Fair Use Doctrine
This permits use of copyrighted material for purposes of Criticism, News Reporting, Teaching, Research and Parody.

2) The Public Domain
Once a copyright term ends, works enter the "public domain", where the use of copyrighted material is permitted.

How to Get USE RIGHTS for IMAGES and SOUND:
1] Make your own original images, music and sounds.
This is one of the best ways to ensure you own the content.
2] Find images and sounds in the Public Domain.
Free, but you must be sure the work really is in the Public Domain.
3] Request or license permission from the copyright holder.
Hey. "If you don't ask, you don't get."
And maybe the copyright owner will give you use-rights in exchange for the publicity, or in support of your cause.
4] License use-rights from Video, Audio and Image Resources.
The safest way to ensure you can use the material. And sometimes the price can be reasonable too.

A. In your opinion, what are the two most interesting resource links (see resource links above and below), and why?
Please include the links in your answer.
For example:
National Geographic has amazing images, and if you buy the Royalty Free images, the fee is determined not by the usage rights licensed, but by the file size requested. Once licensed, Royalty Free images can be used in an unlimited number of projects by the licensee. Kinda expensive, from $145 - to $500, but hey - you get what you pay for! And the licensee can use them forever!
B. List two (2) or more links to resources for images, videos or sounds
- that preferably aren't already in the Assignment Resource lists above and below.
Provide a brief description of the resources, and if their use-rights are available for a FEE - or for FREE.
C. You must briefly comment on at least one other comment. Learn from your classmates.
(Plus, commenting will count toward your grade.)

The resources can be accessed through rather broad categories, simple keyword searches, or by using the very good advanced search tool, which allows keyword searches to be limited by such attributes as date, medium, color, broad subject area, original format, or photographer. Images can be licensed, purchased or sent as a free e-card from the website." [ALA|MARS Best Ref 2004, Reviewed 23 March 2004]

Public libraries have collections of children's books that include many of the topics one would find in books for adults, as well as picture books and fantasy literature. Books for very young children, in particular, are usually heavily illustrated with drawings or photographs and are a great resource for artists and designers.
