This somewhat snarky article from the New York Times suggests that the enthusiasm for Bernie -- and the anti-establishment wave it represents -- is all coming from the "radical left." But in fact the wave has been growing for years.
In 1964, just 29 percent of voters believed government was "run by a few big interests looking out for themselves." Now, 79 percent of Americans believe that, according to Gallup.
The erosion of public trust has been steep in recent years. In 2006, 59 percent of Americans felt government corruption was widespread. Now, 81 percent feel that way.
Meanwhile, for thirty-five years, most Americans haven't seen any gain in their incomes, adjusted for inflation, although the economy is twice as large as it was 35 years ago. Almost all the gains went to the richest 1 percent. In the "recovery" that began in 2009, all the economic gains went to the top, and the median family lost ground.
This is not a revolt by the "radical left." It's a revolt by average Americans who are fed up with the direction we're heading in, and believe the system needs fundamental reform.
