Wal-Mart tops global Fortune 500, edges out Shell

Screen Shot 2014-07-07 at 19.26.55Extract from a CBS money watch article published 7 July 2014

Wal-Mart Stores (WMT), the world’s largest retailer, topped the latest Fortune 500 global rankings of the most valuable companies by revenue, edging out Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A), the Anglo-Dutch oil and natural gas company, which finished in second place. This marks a comeback for Wal-Mart, which trailed first-place finisher Shell last year. A 40 percent drop-off in profit and a 4.6 percent decline in sales in 2013 hurt the energy giant.

Disarray continues at Irish Police Ombudsman Commission

It is not long off a year since the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) begun investigating OSSL whistleblower allegations of police corruption against Royal Dutch Shell in relation to the troubled Corrib Gas Project.
Although Johan Groenewald, the person leading the investigation, said some time ago that publication of his findings was imminent, the process seems to have ground to a halt, possibly due to other controversial events surrounding the GSOC.
There is some indication of the degree of disarray by the news today that a high level whistleblower – no less than a deputy chief of the GSOC – has “put the boot into watchdog boss and his former colleagues in a scathing five-page resignation letter.”
Extract
WHEN Ray Leonard resigned as deputy head of investigations at the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission last weekend, he claimed it was because of a litany of operational deficits and difficulties he had with the policing watchdog. His extraordinary five-page resignation letter – seen by the Sunday Independent – reveals all was not well behind the glass doors of GSOC headquarters on Dublin’s Abbey Street. His departure was the latest curious twist in the Garda spying saga that brought GSOC to crisis point, seriously damaged the force, and prompted an ultimately inconclusive inquiry by retired High Court judge, John Cooke.
This news will further undermine the credibility of all findings of GSOC investigations undertaken while the unit has been operating in crisis mode.
The ongoing scandals have already led to the resignations of the Irish Justice Minister and the Garda Commissioner (Chief of the Irish Police Force).
If Mr Leonard has any difficulty in publishing his comments in the Irish media, I would be pleased to oblige.

Shell flies in $30m for air support

The first pieces of support infrastructure to back up the burgeoning Browse Basin oil and gas industry have arrived, with Royal Dutch Shell committing $30 million to underpin a dedicated search and rescue helicopter service out of Broome. Shell, which is developing the pioneering Prelude floating LNG project, is committing the funds over an 18-month period. “As a result of the Prelude FLNG project, our activity offshore in the region is increasing,” Shell Australia chairman Andrew Smith said.

14 LESSONS FROM ULTRA RICH PINOYS

SHARED BY MOJO

14 Lessons We Can Learn From the Ultra Rich Pinoys

One of the biggest misconceptions is that most of the billionaires had it easy because they were born with a silver spoon. Though this might be the case for some rich individuals, there are still good examples of those who achieved their success today through their own hard work.
Here are some effective lessons we can draw from the ultra rich on how to persevere and achieve our own success!

Henry Sy (Estimated worth: US$11.4 Billion)

henry sy prime holdings
If you are a small entrepreneur looking to make it to the big league, you can learn a lot from Henry Sy. SM Quiapo or Shoe Mart started as a small shoe shop in downtown Manila by Henry Sy in the 1950s, selling overrun and rejected shoes from different shoe factories.
Fast forward to the mid-80s, Sy was already able to establish the very first SM Supermall, SM City North EDSA. Amid the global financial crisis, then he was able to earn US$5 billion in 2010 alone. With the amassed wealth, he expanded his business into real estate as well as banking.
What can you learn from him?
1. Market leaders were once market followers
Every start-up business started as a market follower to other more established companies. The same for Sy. He is the perfect example of how an entrepreneur can grow a small business into an empire. Though he started selling shoes with a small shop in Quiapo, he was able to grow his assets and eventually opened his first mall.
2. You can fight the odds
Do you remember the 2008-2010 period when the economy was at its worst? Even when the numbers are stacked against you, you could and should still find ways on how to succeed. For Sy, it was a matter of being creative with his investments which led him to earn US$5 billion in 2010 alone.
3. Diversify your investment
The career of Sy from the 1950s to the present is a story of diversification. What are the different investments made by SM? He was able to become the proponent of malls in the Philippines, plus he transitioned well into the banking and real estate industries. This goes to show how important it is to step out of your comfort zone to achieve greater success.

John Gokongwei Jr (Net worth: US$3.9 billion)

john gokongwei cebu pacific
John Gokongwei Jr was born in Fujian Province, China on August 11, 1926,. He is known to invest in the telecommunications, aviation and the livestock industry. Being the third richest person in the Philippines, ranking behind Henry Sy and Lucio Tan, his story is nothing short of inspiring.
At a very young age, he had shown his entrepreneurial side in order to survive. Born to an affluent family in Cebu, his family lost everything when his father died when Gokongwei was still young and he was left to support his family. His father lost everything from the banks when he died. This event defined Gokongwei’s rise to where he is right now.
He started selling different things in the market just to meet the day–to-day requirements. By the Second World War, he started his company called Amnesia where he imported textile remnants, fruits and clothing from the US. His first taste of commercial success happened in 1957 when he was able to borrow funds from the then chairman of China Bank, Albino Sycip. With the P500,000 he started the milling plant which was then called the Universal Robina Corporation. And the rest is history!
What can you learn from him?
1. Your name or family background does not define you
The Gokongwei’s story is not your average rags-from-riches story. He lost everything and had to start from scratch, which was more difficult than not having anything to start with. If you know how to play your cards right, it is possible to increase your assets without relying on your family’s wealth.
2. Do not be afraid to get that loan
If you really know how to use your capital, it is possible to reach market leadership in your chosen market. A lot of people forget the fact that they need a capital in order to start something big. The bank is willing to help entrepreneurs who have an idea on how to grow that money.
3. Know what the market needs
During the Second World War, one of the toughest times to survive, Gokongwei managed to start his own company. It was not easy to import goods from anywhere but he managed to do it. His determination to overcome obstacles is one lesson than everyone should try to emulate.

Andrew Tan (Net Worth: US$4.6 billion)

andrew tan
Widely known as the third wealthiest Pinoy, Andrew Tan is the newly crowned “Alcohol King”. Not only did he bring Emperador, a local brandy, to the top, he also managed to beat Ginebra San Miguel in the process. He owns both Emperador and Generoso brandy.
Emperador is the number one selling Brandy, reporting 109% growth in sales in just one year. In 2011, Emperador managed to beat United Spirits, the former market leader based in India, which is a larger population than the Philippines. Tan also operates McDonald’s Philippines, Resorts World Manila and Alliance Global Megaworld.
Tan had a humble beginning as a Chinese immigrant in the Philippines. During his college days, he would rather walk than take the public transport to the University of the East just to save some money. His father used to sell cheap battery powered transistor radios in Carriedo to support the family.
What can we learn from him?
1. Be practical
During his younger days, he saved up his money by not taking the public transport. This is a lesson that is still applicable today. Why waste your money in buying a car (that will surely depreciate in value) when you have other cheaper options?
2. Have a dream
Born in Hong Kong, his family started as a struggling small time entrepreneur in Quiapo, Manila. This situation never became a hindrance to him after so many years. He dreamed big and he worked hard to realize it.
3. Slow and steady win the race
Before Emperador became the number one selling Brandy in the Philippines, he kept a low profile from other well-established brands, such as Ginebra San Miguel and Lucio Tan’s Tanduay. Both brands were built in the 19th century, and going head-to-head with them would mean cut-throat competition for Emperador before it was ready. Patience is definitely Tan’s virtue.
4. Dare to be different
In terms of marketing, Tan centered the advertising of Emperador by affiliating success to his brand. This is far from the type of imagery that placed Ginebra San Miguel and Tanduay on the map of the liquor market.

David Consunji (Net Worth: US$3.3 Billion)

david consunji DMCI
In the 1950s, David Consunji started making chicken coops for the bureau of animal industry, and he expanded the projects to hotels, hospitals and even the palace of Brunei’s Sultan.
DMCI, a company Consunji founded, began operation in a one room office in Manila until it was awarded the US$26 million contract to renovate the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in December 2013.
Currently controlling Semirara Mining, the largest producer of coal in the Philippines, Consunji has diversified his assets in construction and real estate.
What can we learn from him?
1. Improve on what you do best
It is common for businessmen to diversify their investments. However, Consunji concentrated on what he knew best then, which was constructed and that had built a foundation of his wealth. New entrepreneurs may want to reduce the risks of failure by starting with their expertise first.
2. Government projects can provide you great opportunities
Entrepreneurs, no matter the size of the business, are exposed to vast opportunities with government projects. Not only does it help with nation building, it is also a good way to grow your business.

Manuel Villar (Net Worth: US$1.1 Billion)

manny villar
Manuel Villar, a real estate mogul, started as a financial analyst and an accountant, before becoming a house speaker during Joseph Estrada’s short stint at the presidency. Villar was among the wealthiest lawmakers due to his real estate ventures, and he ran for election in 2010 but lost to Benigno Aquino III. Though born to a poor family in Tondo, Manila, Villar graduated from the University of the Philippines.
What can we learn from him?
1. Invest in education
Though there have been successful college dropouts, but it is no doubt that a good education can provide one with a solid foundation and vast opportunities to grow. Having the right foundation to manage a business can reduce the risk of failing. Villar recognized the importance of solid education when he enrolled in the most prestigious state University in the country, the University of the Philippines.
2. The future is in your hands
Who would’ve thought a boy from Tondo would eventually become a Congressman, a Senator and run for presidency? This just shows that everything is possible and we shape our own future. It is not about where you are right now, but about what you are going to do to achieve your success.
Billionaires come from different backgrounds, but they’ve all gone through their fair share of obstacles to achieve success. Despite the challenges that they have to deal with, they knew what is required to realize their dreams. Will you be paving your own path to success with these valuable lessons?

By Paul Morden, Sarnia Observer, Friday, July 4, 2014

Ronald Daye, 55, was just 24 days away from retiring from Shell Canada near Corunna when he was burned Wednesday in an explosion at the refinery’s steam plant.
The incident that is being investigated by Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, and other agencies, came nearly 11 years after Daye’s nephew, Trevor Daye, died on the job at Suncor, a refinery just down the road from Shell’s.
Ronald Daye, a married father of two sons, is being treated in the burn unit of a London hospital.
“As a family, we’re reeling,” said Daye’s brother, Russell Daye.
He travelled from Sarnia to London Thursday to be with family members gathered at the hospital
“He’s burned significantly,” Daye said.
“To see somebody that you love like that, it shakes you up.”
Daye said his brother has worked at Shell for approximately 35 years.

5 Places In The Philippines That Will Take You Back 400 Years

FROM MOSSES

Being under the Spanish rule for more than 300 years, almost every town or city in

the Philippines has architectural gems. While most have been sold off, or deeply neglected, or are already in ruins, some have thankfully survived through the centuries

and are still intact and relatively well-preserved. For the history buffs, these five heritage towns are worth visiting more than once.

Taal, Batangas

The charming town of Taal, 112 kilometers (70 miles) south of Manila, is more known for what is said to be the world’s smallest volcano of the same name. But there is more to discover here like the grand ancestral homes lining up its main street and the church of Basilica de San Martin de Tours, which is the largest in Asia.

In the late 19th century, the local coffee industry boomed. Due to the growing financial prosperity of middle class businessmen, numerousBahay na Bato (stone houses) were built which we can all see still standing in the town today.

Taal town is a marvel. Photography enthusiasts will surely have a great time paying Galleria Taal a visit. This is an ancestral house turned into a museum , which houses a collection of antique cameras and old photos.

For those who yearn for a taste of the past, Villa Tortuga offers a dinner package where you get to wear period dresses and have your pictures taken with faded photographs as your souvenirs. It is a perfect way to experience the life of the elite during the Spanish regime.

Don’t miss visiting the mansion of local heroine, Marcela Agoncillo. She was one of the three women who produced the very first hand-sewn official Philippine flag which was unveiled during the announcement of Philippine independence from Spanish rule on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite.

How To Get to Taal

Taal Batangas Map

From Manila, ride a bus going to Lipa City, Batangas then hop on a jeepney bound for Taal Town. You will know you are in Taal when you notice the steep road and get a glimpse of the imposing church right ahead.

Vigan, Ilocos Sur

Calle Crisologo, Vigan, Ilocos Sur

The capital city of Ilocos Sur, Vigan, is a UNESCO World Site and is also one of the remaining intact Hispanic towns in the country. Its old homes showcase a fusion of Chinese, Filipino and European colonial architecture.

A former Philippine President, Elpidio Quirino and Padre Jose Burgos, a Philippine National Hero, both call Vigan City their home.

History lovers will definitely enjoy walking along the cobblestone street of Calle Crisologo. Animal lovers can visit Baluarte – a mini zoo owned by former Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson. For the prayerful, St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is not hard to miss since it is located in the heart of the city, fronting Plaza Salcedo.

St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, Vigan, Ilocos Sur

For old romantics, the tale of Vigan is the perfect explanation to the old saying “love conquers all.” The story behind the survival of Vigan during WWII is a love story in itself. A former Japanese commander fell in love with a Bigueña (a female local) and thus ordered Vigan to be spared from the war.

How To Get to Vigan

Vigan Ilocos Sur Map

The fastest way to reach Vigan is via a 1-hour flight to the nearby city of Laoag, Ilocos Norte from Manila. Then travel by land from Laoag to Vigan for two hours. Vigan is also reachable from Manila via an 8-hour bus ride.

Pila, Laguna

Unlike the neighboring towns of Pagsanjan and Sta. Cruz, Pila’s pride comes to the fact that its ancestral homes survived the turmoil of World War II.

The town itself was declared as a National Historical Landmark by the NHCP or National Historical Commission of the Philippines (formerly NHI or National Historical Institute) on May 17, 2000.

It’s also considered as one of the oldest settlements in the country since archeologists have found artifacts dating back to the late Tang Dynasty. The town was built with the St. Anthony of Padua Parish Church as the center with the old houses, town hall and the plaza grounds surrounding it – giving off a very laid-back feel.

The old homes of Pila are still being occupied by private residents. A visit to the town museum is recommended to know more about the Pila’s history. It’s no surprise that this quaint town was chosen a film location for some scenes in the popular daytime Philippine series Be Careful With My Heart.

Ride buses plying the Manila-Sta. Cruz, Laguna route then exit at Pila Junction at the National Highway. Travel time is about 2 hours depending on traffic. The town center is shortly reachable from here either by jeepney or by foot for about five minutes.
Silay City, Negros Occidental

Dubbed as the Little Paris, Silay City was named after Kansilay trees due to its abundance in the area during the early days. There are more than thirty well-preserved ancestral homes here which have been declared as historical landmarks.

Similar to the coffee industry of Batangas, the advent of sugarcane plantations in Negros grew Silay City’s economy, giving rise to its exuberant collection of old homes. One of the most famous of these homes is the Gaston Mansion or more popularly known as Balay Negrense (balay meaning house).

Silay City can be explored through a less than 1-hour plane ride from Manila, landing at Bacolod-Silay International Airport. A local shipping company, 2GO, also offers trips to Bacolod City every few days via the Port of Manila. Silay City is just about a 30-minute ride from the Bacolod City.

Biñan City, Laguna

Biñan, also referred to as Binyang by local townsfolk, is famous for its mouth-watering Puto Biñan – a kind of rice cake topped with cheese, butter or salted egg mostly produced in Brgy. San Vicente and for its custom-made hats found in Brgy. Platero.
A modern city in the eyes of many, not many know that there are beautiful ancestral houses hidden in the heart of the city. Rows of Spanish homes have survived the past decades and can be found on the streets along San Isidro de Labrador Parish Church.

Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine National Hero, had his early education here in Biñan in which the nearby City of Sta. Rosa used to be a part of. He hails from Biñan through his mother’s side, Doña Teodoro Alonso.
Recently, the Alberto House, the ancestral home of Dr. Rizal’s mother, was recently stopped from being demolished. Sadly, it was sold off by one of the descendants of Teodora and was scheduled to be transferred to a resort in Bagac, Bataan. Fortunately, the local government and the people of Biñan are trying to prevent the transfer from happening.

Binan City LagunaHow To Get To Biñan City

Biñan is accessible from Manila via a 1-hour bus ride passing through the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) via Carmona Exit. One short jeepney ride from the bus terminal is all it takes to reach the town proper.
