INSIGHT-For green activists, Arctic drilling could be the next big thing

WASHINGTON, JUNE 3 | BY TIMOTHY GARDNER

Michael Brune is pleased that activists in kayaks are training for another “Paddle in Seattle” to confront an expected Royal Dutch Shell rig on its way to the Arctic to explore for oil. What makes the head of the Sierra Club just as happy is the effect Shell’s Arctic ambitions are having on his own environmental organization.

Sierra’s funding drive against the resumption in Arctic drilling has taken in three times more money than usual campaigns by the nation’s oldest green group, said Brune, though he wouldn’t reveal specific amounts. And the group’s petition opposing President Barack Obama’s decision in favor of Shell last month has collected more signatures than any appeal in two years.

Shell responds to Department of Natural Resources

2 June 2015:

SEATTLE – There are new developments in the oil battle in Seattle.

Shell Oil is challenging the state’s opinion that docking the Polar Pioneer drilling rig in Seattle might violate the state constitution. And, there’s a new legal challenge to prevent Shell from drilling in the Arctic this summer.

Last month, the Washington state Department of Natural Resources sent Shell a letter advising that the West Duwamish Waterway, where the Polar Pioneer rig is now docked, is for navigation, not long-term moorage.

Environmentalists sue over Shell plan to drill in Arctic

(Reuters) – Several environmental groups sued the United States on Tuesday to derail Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s plan to drill in the Arctic Ocean as soon as July.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior, gave conditional approval in May to Shell’s resumption of fossil fuel exploration in the Arctic, which was paused after a mishap-filled 2012 season.

The decision was met with approval by some Alaska lawmakers, who believe it will bring money and jobs to the state, as well as protests from environmentalists.

Decline of North Sea Oil Fields Forces Political Shifts in Britain

ABERDEEN, Scotland — For the oil industry, the decline of the North Sea fields is part of a global challenge.

But for Britain, it is also a political problem.

The British government, which has long treated the oil industry as a cash cow, was forced to confront the threat to jobs and taxes during the run-up to last year’s referendum on independence for Scotland, which claims a big portion of waters where the North Sea oil and natural gas are.

The Scottish National Party, which supported independence in the referendum, accused the central government in London of mismanaging Britain’s oil and gas resources. Oil officials including Bob Dudley, BP’s chief executive, said during the referendum campaign that the uncertainty and legal problems a Scottish victory would bring could discourage future investment in the North Sea.

Older Americans are at increasing risk of retiring into poverty. A new study prepared for Sen. Bernie Sanders found that more than half of all American households with someone 55 or older have no retirement savings, and four in 10 retirees are very concerned about “not having enough income to get by.” “This report makes it clear that there is a retirement crisis in America today.  At a time when half of all older workers have no retirement savings, we need to expand, not cut, Social Security benefits so that every American can retire with dignity,” Bernie said. Bernie has introduced legislation that would make the wealthiest Americans pay the same share of their income into Social Security as other wage earners. That change would fully fund the retirement program through 2065. Under the measure, the average benefit would increase by $65 a month, cost-of-living adjustments would more accurately measure inflation for seniors and the minimum benefit would be raised to lift millions of seniors out of poverty. “Social Security is the most successful program in our nation's history. At a time of massive wealth and income inequality, we have got to demand that the richest people in this country pay their fair share,” Bernie added. Every year, the federal government spends $68 billion on retirement savings incentives that almost all end up in the pockets of the wealthiest Americans. The GAO report found that poverty rates are higher for people approaching retirement and people who are 75 and older.  Altogether, 52 percent of households with someone 55 and older have no savings. And more than a quarter of households age 55-64 have no pension and a median net worth of only about $9,000. Without Social Security, 43 percent of seniors 65 and older would be thrown into poverty. Australian regulators are shaping up as one of the major hurdles for Royal Dutch Shell’s friendly $91 billion takeover of BG Group, with analysts tipping coal-seam gas sales may be needed for Shell’s plan to create a world-dominating LNG business to get through.

Credit Suisse analysts said the transaction between the energy giants should clear regulators in Brazil, where Shell wants BG’s deepwater Santos Basin, and the European Union, where both companies are domiciled.

Instead, Australia and China will be the main hurdles, potentially with conflicting views on the best way to structure a deal for their respective national interests, the investment bank said yesterday.
