Missouri Governor Jay Nixon Smacks Down Anti-

Union ‘Right To Work’ Bill With His Veto Pen

Missouri Democratic Governor Jay Nixon vetoed a controversial right to work bill (House Bill No. 116) on Thursday. In rejecting the legislation, Governor Nixon argued that “right to work” is a misnomer. He noted that:

Right-to-work laws create a less skilled workforce, drive down wages and directly interfere with a business owner’s right to contract.

The Governor went on to outline three specific objections to the legislation. He argued that House Bill 116 was bad for the economy, that it constituted unwarranted government interference into the operations of Missouri businesses, and that it needlessly exposed businesses to criminal prosecution and unlimited civil liability.

He concluded by stating:

I stand with the workers of Missouri and reject this wrongheaded legislation that will hurt our economy, our families and our businesses.

Had Nixon signed the bill, Missouri would have become the 26th right to work state in the country. Missouri borders six right to work states — Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee.

Robert Kennedy’s death did not extinguish the promise of America.

47 years ago today, Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down as he made his way from a stage at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, moments after winning the California Democratic primary. I had worked for him as a college intern the previous summer, and, like millions of others, saw in him the possibility for creating a new America that would end the Vietnam War and embrace social and economic justice. With his death, and the death two months before of Martin Luther King, Jr., the nation seemed to lose its heart. The war claimed more lives, on both sides. Our cities burned. Many in my generation gave up on peaceful social change. Some turned to violence; others dropped out. Mostly, we began to lose faith in the promise of America. To protect ourselves from utter despair we turned away from hope and toward cynicism. But cynicism is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Five months later, Richard Nixon was elected president.

No matter how dismal the world may look and no matter how hopeless it may seem, cynicism or despair invite only worse. Robert Kennedy’s death did not extinguish the promise of America. That promise lives on, in all of us.

Royal Dutch Shell’s plans for exploratory drilling in the US Arctic this summer will involve the harassment of whales and seals by the thousands, an application document filed by Shell to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) reveals.

Most notably, Shell estimates its Arctic activities will expose more than 2,500 bowhead whales, more than 2,500 gray whales and more than 50,000 ringed seals to continuous sounds and pulsed sounds, deemed damaging enough to constitute harassment.

Sir Mark Moody-Stuart calls for divestment in fossil-fuel companies

When the oilmen themselves are arguing for stronger action to fight climate change, it’s probably time to start acting.

Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, the former chairman of oil giant Royal Dutch Shell, said that the lack of progress the world has made on climate change is, “distressing,” and that it was “rational” for investors to start divesting their money from companies that extract fossil fuels,according to a report in The Guardian.

According to the paper, “His striking remarks are the most supportive of divestment made by any senior figure in the fossil fuel business.”

To the surprise of nobody, Saudi Arabia and the other OPEC member states decided in Vienna on Friday to maintain production targets of 30 million barrels a day, making sure the world remains flooded with oil. The fact that OPEC—particularly the core countries of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates—have refused to play their traditional stabilizing role and cut oil production makes it less likely that oil prices will rebound to the $115 a barrel level that was reached about one year ago.

A proposed reduction in natural gas output at Groningen in the Netherlands, Europe’s biggest field, will probably be limited by the nation’s ability to convert imported fuel into the right quality for domestic use, GasTerra BV said.

Groningen production needs to be about 33 billion cubic meters a year during a cold winter, given the nation’s ability to transform imported high-calorific gas into low-calorific fuel used by Dutch households, according to Chief Executive Officer Gertjan Lankhorst. The company is the sole marketer of the field’s output.
