Disco Inferno Dear FRIEND: "Burn up the phones" - what is that, some new cyberterrorism threat? A wild new "app"? Nope; it's what happens when you, and like-minded others, exercise your right to be heard. It's time to burn up the phones on Capitol Hill. The Powers That Be have set a vote on the horrific "Fast Track" bill tomorrow. (I would call it "execrable," but I'm not exactly sure what that means.) If you care about anything, anything at all, then please pick up the phone, call (202) 224-3121, ask for your Congressman, and register your disapproval. Say this: "Vote NO on Fast Track." If you feel that your talk needs to be pointed, then here are your talking points: (1) Our trade debt stands at eleven trillion dollars ($11,000,000,000,000.00). That's more than $35,000 for every human being in America - including you. "Fast Track" would pave the way for new trade bills that would increase that. How are we ever going to pay that money back? (2) Fast Track applies to whatever the Executive Branch calls a trade agreement, even if it has nothing to do with trade. (3) Fast Track unconstitutionally restricts Congress from holding hearings, conducting investigations, debating a bill and offering amendments - basically, its job. In fact, it could restrict each House Member to only 83 seconds of debate. (4) No other bills get this special treatment - not bills on taxes, or Social Security, or defense, or transportation, or healthcare. Nothing. (5) Fast Track applies to trade bills that the Executive Branch hasn't even released to the public. (6) None of the "standards" that Fast Track sets for trade agreements is enforceable - not one single standard. Or you can just say that you're tired of Middle Class America getting hosed. I sure am. Our medicine could kill millions because big pharma companies like Pfizer want to make a quick profit.

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is buying antibiotics from dirty factories in China that breed killer "superbugs" -- risking the lives of millions. It's time this stopped. Drug companies must put public health above their corporate profits. Sign the petition Friend, We take medicine to get healthy. The story is this: Pfizer and other pharmaceutical giants source antibiotics from dirty, dangerous factories in China. These factories dump raw antibiotic waste straight into the environment. That creates a perfect breeding ground for antibiotic resistant "superbugs" -- which spread globally. These superbugs have been called a "catastrophic threat" to public health, and could kill millions. That's the revelation of a new SumOfUs report, which exposes big pharma's murky supply chain for the first time. We need to speak up now to get this to stop, and to put public health above corporate profits.  Sign the petition to demand that Pfizer stops buying antibiotics from polluting factories driving the rise of killer superbugs. Months of behind-the-scenes digging into big pharma's secretive operations has revealed these links for the first time. Pfizer and others are putting their profits ahead of our health, by buying cheap antibiotics from dangerous factories with a string of serious environmental and safety violations. These factories are dumping raw antibiotic waste straight into rivers and waterways, in breach of even China's lax environmental regulations, and creating the perfect breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant superbugs. As these superbugs spread globally, the World Health Organization is already sounding the alarm. The UK's Chief Medical Officer has called antibiotic resistance a "catastrophic threat" that could set modern health care back 200 years, and kill millions globally. The spread of superbugs means that infectious diseases like gonorrhoea and pneumonia could become untreatable, and we could return to an era when a simple cut could kill. Overprescription of antibiotics and widespread use in factory farms are two of the known culprits behind antibiotic resistance. But pollution generated by the massive antibiotics production industry is an overlooked hidden killer. By dumping antibiotic waste into the environment, these factories create huge breeding grounds for superbugs. Concentrations of antibiotics in polluted waterways can be as high as in the bloodstream of someone on a full strength dose of antibiotics. And these are the factories that Pfizer, McKesson, Teva and other Western pharma giants are buying from. This isn't just a problem for China or for Pfizer customers. Modern air travel and trade mean that the rapid spread of infectious diseases is the new reality. Infectious superbugs that thrive in the waste dumped by these polluting factories in China quickly find their way into the bodies of children, adults and the elderly around the world, with fatal consequences. The reason this happens is simple -- Pfizer and other big pharmaceutical corporations make more money by relying on cheap, mass-produced antibiotics without strong environmental and safety procedures in place. And until now, no one has known. If we can change that, by generating a global outcry, we can get big pharma to stop buying from these dangerous factories. The absolute most important thing you can do today, and every day is to call your congressperson and courteously tell them their future positions as your representatives will be in peril if they don’t vote NO on Fast Track and the Trade Adjustment Assistance bill (TAA) which is simply meant to grease the skids of fast track. 

Republicans are planning to use the vote for TAA that slashes Medicare against Democrats in 2016, essentially calling them two-faced, and my feeling about this is that I tend to agree.   So tell your Democratic Reps to “stand tall and vote NO for both Fast Track and NO for Trade Adjustment Assistance or TAA.”

We just got word that your Representative, Scott Peters, might side with the fossil fuel industry by voting to fast track the Trans-Pacific Partnership -- a massive trade deal that would threaten our climate, workers' rights, and internet freedom. As if this wasn't enough, yesterday climate deniers in the house added language to the bill that makes it even worse! It's a handout to fossil fuel companies that forbids U.S. negotiators from ever addressing climate change in a trade deal. This new language might win over a couple of votes on the far right, but we hope it'll lose many more in the center and on the left who take climate change seriously.

The vote on the TPP is expected to happen tomorrow, and it will be decided by a razor-thin margin. Rep. Peters's vote could help decide whether the TPP moves forward, or dies in Congress. Can you call him to say that you expect him to vote NO on fast tracking the TPP?

Representatives who are on the fence about major legislation like this often use feedback from their constituents to make a final decision. Rep. Peters is under immense pressure from corporate lobbyists to give in on fast track, so it's up to us to push right back.

The TPP would allow multinational fossil fuel corporations to sue governments that take action on climate change. Instead of keeping fossil fuels in the ground, it would make it easier to dig them up.

KICK BIG POLLUTERS OUT OF CLIMATE POLICY

Sign the petition to the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change:

"We call on you to take immediate action to protect COP21 and all future negotiations from the influence of big polluters. Given the fossil fuel industry’s years of interference intended to block progress, push false solutions, and continue the disastrous status quo, the time has come to stop treating big polluters as legitimate “stakeholders” and to remove them from climate policymaking."

Today, we are facing the prospect of the destruction of life as we know it and irreversible damage to our planet due to climate change. Scientists are telling us with ever more urgency that we must act quickly to stop extracting fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But the world’s largest polluters have prevented progress on bold climate action for far too long.

We call on the Parties to the UNFCCC to protect the UN climate talks and climate policymaking around the world from the influence of big polluters. The world is looking to the next round of negotiations – in Paris this December – for decisive action on climate. This is a pivotal moment to create real solutions. We need a strong outcome from the Paris talks in order to seize the momentum of a growing global movement, and to urge leaders to take bolder action to address the climate crisis.

But the fossil fuel industry and other transnational corporations that have a vested interest in stopping progress continue to delay, weaken, and block climate policy at every level. From the World Coal Association hosting a summit on "clean coal" around COP19 to Shell aggressively lobbying in the European Union for weak renewable energy goals while promoting gas – these big polluters are peddling false solutions to protect their profits while driving the climate crisis closer to the brink.

A decade ago, the international community took on another behemoth industry – Big Tobacco – and created a precedent-setting treaty mechanism that removed the tobacco industry from public health policy. This can happen again here.

Corporate Accountability International will deliver this message and the list of signatures at the climate talks in Bonn, Germany, the first week of June. We will do another delivery by the end of COP21 in Paris this December.
