There is hardly a bigger motivator than fear, and it is a fact not lost on Republicans who prey on Americans’ fear of all things not conservative, but especially those foreign “extremists.” Of course, some Americans are acutely aware that the biggest threat to their safety, and the nation, is from American extremists in the […] Read more »
Amid one of California’s most trying times in history, its citizens are making great gains in conserving water. With an awesome report of 29% in residential water savings across the state during the month of May, the measures that have been taken are unprecedented. Many of these conservation efforts are due to aggressive reductions imposed on residents by Governor Jerry Brown.
According to numerous news resources and the state Water Resources Control Board, the aggressive campaign changes that have been made can be contributed to the following.
Environmental Programs and Residents Cut Water Usage 400
With a wide diversity of environmental programs in place, residents are being reached through ads in newspapers, mailers, and focused landscaping workshops. It is also important to note that more of California’s citizens are reporting incidents of waste to the city so that they can be corrected. According to the state’s data for the month of May, the city issued 35 warnings to those who were not complying to the conservations restrictions imposed.
Penalties Assessed and had dropped 29% Campaign Iniatitives
As a result of the latest imposed conservation restrictions, the total number of complaints increased substantially as well. From the month of April to May, these numbers increased to 2.5 times statewide. Of the total amount reported, 1786 resulted in penalties being assessed, approximately 59% being assessed in the city of Fresno.
Because California is now moving into its heaviest season for water usage, there are also additional measures being taken as well. Some of the most substantial include changing how each citizen waters their lawns. Typically, during the summer season, the lawn irrigations and usage adds up to approximately 80% of the water consumption. Addressing these problems aggressively is on the top list of conservation efforts, especially since campaigns have already been introduced to their residents about going gold. Led by campaigns that say, ‘let it go’ and ‘turn it off’, even the proudest homeowners are beginning to follow the new initiatives. One of the primary objectives of this type of campaign is for Californians to allow their landscape to transition from green to gold. As previously indicated, all of which are on the list to make sure that the city meets the requirements imposed by the governor. READ MORE
Secret money is gushing into the presidential campaigns as never before through fake “social welfare” nonprofits under 501-c-4 of the Internal Revenue Code -- and the IRS has decided not to stop it, reports the NY Times. Under an exemption set up more than a century ago, nonprofits don’t have to report their sources of income as long as they “further the common good and general welfare of the people of the community” -- but obviously this doesn’t include being shills for politicians. Yet the IRS remains so scarred by the scandal two years ago over its scrutiny of nonprofits tied to the Tea Party that it won’t investigate.
That’s irresponsible. The IRS shouldn’t be caving to Republican political pressure. (IRS commissioner John Koskinen went so far as to say nonprofits could spend up to 49 percent of their money on political activities -- which is dead wrong. They’re not supposed to engage in any political activity at all.)
The President has the power to stop much of this. He should immediately:
1. Fire Koshinen and instruct the IRS (which is part of the Treasury Department) to crack down on fraudulent nonprofits.
2 Instruct the SEC to require corporations to disclose their political contributions to their shareholders.
3. By executive order also require federal contractors to make such disclosures, and to cease any political donations if more than half their revenues come from the federal government.
If Obama is concerned about his legacy as it affects our democracy, he must act. What do you think?
The Ringling Bros. circus is coming to Los Angeles and Ontario and animals need your help! In order to force elephants to perform tricks, trainers beat them with sharp metal bullhooks, and lions and tigers are also whipped. Ringling has announced that it will phase out the use of elephants in acts by 2018, but their retirement day needs to come now. Please help put an end to this cruelty and join PETA, Animal Defenders International, In Defense of Animals, and CompassionWorks International to rally against the use of all animals in circuses.

All I can say is: wow. I’ve been working on stopping Fast Track for years now and I can tell you that—even though Congress pulled some last-minute political maneuvering to get Fast Track passed last month—we beat all the odds and changed the game. And we did it together.
One year ago, if you had told me that Congress would vote against this awful legislation, I wouldn’t have believed you. But despite the arm-twisting from corporations and the 1%, we nearly got Congress to defeat Fast Track because of the pressure you and millions of others put on your legislators.
And now the real debate has begun. In the coming months, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)—the biggest trade deal in the history of U.S. trade deals—is going to be finalized, and Congress will have to vote on it. We need to make sure the TPP doesn’t sell out working people here and abroad, give foreign corporations special privileges to sue U.S. taxpayers to recover lost profits or undermine efforts to stop climate change.
When this Fast Track fight began, corporate CEOs and high-powered Washington lobbyists thought it was going to be a walk in the park. But because we put enough pressure on legislators by sending emails, making calls, taking action on social media and turning out for events, we slowed down and almost thwarted their plan to rubber stamp more bad trade deals that ship jobs overseas, lower wages and give more power to big corporations. This should send a strong signal to our elected leaders and the 1% that we’re not going to tolerate corporate CEOs and billionaires undermining our democracy.
We need to carry this momentum forward and tell our lawmakers to focus on policies to raise wages, so millions of working families don’t have to worry about putting food on the table or keeping a roof over their heads. And one way to do that is to ensure that the final TPP is as good for working people as President Obama has said it is.
Leaked documents from the TPP negotiations (remember, the actual text is secret) show that some of the same problematic things included in past disastrous trade deals are being considered for the final version of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Things like the investor-state dispute settlement system, which allows corporations to sue governments if they feel a law or regulation cost them profits.
So this is only the beginning of our fight to demand better trade rules that benefit our families and communities.
