A new WMUR poll of New Hampshire revealed that Bernie Sanders has cut Hillary Clinton’s lead from 31 points to almost within the poll’s margin of error.
According to WMUR, “The poll shows Clinton leading Sanders 42 percent to 36 percent, with 5 percent supporting Vice President Joe Biden, who has been the subject of speculation in recent days about the possibility of becoming a candidate. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and former U.S. Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia each receive 1 percent, with 3 percent favoring some other candidate and 12 percent undecided.”
In May, Clinton led Elizabeth Warren 51-20% with Sanders at 13%. By June, the Clinton margin was reduced to 43%-35%. Sen. Sanders has gained a net 2 points in the last month to pull to almost within the poll’s 5.9% margin of error.
Hillary Clinton remains very popular in the state with a 72% approval rating, and she is viewed by a huge majority as the candidate that is most likely to win the primary (68%) and the general election (68%).
What is happening in New Hampshire is a surge in the popularity of Bernie Sanders. Sen. Sanders (I-VT) has seen his approval rating go from 45% in May to 69% today. It isn’t that voters dislike Hillary Clinton, but that the more they get to know Bernie Sanders, the more they like him. Sanders was named the most likeable candidate in the poll by a margin of 40%-24%.
The Clinton hating press has been trying to sell the tightening of the Democratic race as a collapse when the truth is that the shift in polling has less to do with anything that Hillary Clinton has done wrong. The real story is the rise in popularity of Bernie Sanders.
Sanders is giving Democratic voters a real choice, and he is turning a primary that many believed would be a blowout for Hillary Clinton into a competitive election.
