Dead Men Have No Sperm… Or Do They?

Postmortem sperm donation allows men to give life even after theirs has ended.

If you thought making babies was an activity reserved for the living, welcome to your new reality: a world where procreation is almost always possible, even after you’re dead.

As the name suggests, post-mortem sperm retrieval (PMSR) refers to the practice of harvesting sperm from the deceased. And pulling that off requires some know-how. Cappy Rothman, a Los Angeles urologist who first performed the procedure, initially proposed three potential ways of getting the job done. One: induce ejaculation by administering a drug that causes the body to convulse. Two: remove the reproductive organs and retrieve the sperm on the operating table. Three: the old-fashioned way, by manual stimulation. Rothman told journalist Jenny Morber that when he ran that last option by a coworker, he was told, “Hey doc, I’ve been asked to do a lot of things as chief resident of neurosurgery but if you think I’m going to jerk off a dead man you’re crazy.”
