What’s the Supreme Court Cooking Up Now? BY TED VAILL At the University of Chicago Law School in the 1960s, my constitutional law professor was Phil Kurland, a Buddha-like figure who clerked for famous Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter. Kurland never was appointed to the Supreme Court himself, but he managed to set himself up as the oracle of the Supreme Court when he edited The Supreme Court Review, which analyzed critically the Supremes’ decisions each year, after the Court’s term ended in late June. Kurland is long gone, but he was succeeded as Chicago’s constitutional law professors by current Justice Antonin Scalia and future President Barack Obama, among others. As the student in Kurland’s class who got the highest grade, I feel that it is appropriate for me to review some of the decisions of the Supreme Court for this term, even those which have not been decided yet.   READ MORE shared from

Located about 30 miles north of the Texas capital in a deeply conservative county, the city of Georgetown will be powered 100 percent by renewable energy within the next couple years. Georgetown’s residents and elected officials made the decision to invest in two large renewable energy projects, one solar and one wind, not because they reduced greenhouse gas emissions or sent a message about the viability of renewable energy — but because it just made sense, according to Mayor Dale Ross.

The TPP was pushed back today

Here’s a rare bit of good news:

Just minutes ago, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or the TPP, was dealt a very big blow in Congress. It's not totally clear what happens next -- but the road to fast tracking this massive corporate power grab is now much harder.

The TPP was pushed back today for for one, simple, beautiful reason: people power.

Labor unions, human rights organizations, internet freedom advocates, climate activists, and progressives of all stripes threw their weight behind stopping this deal, and it's working. We're starting to be heard.

Nancy Pelosi, House Democratic Leader, made the connection between this deal and climate change too. She publicly bucked enormous pressure, voting against a key component of the deal over concerns about the deal’s impact on climate change.

The coalition that is working together against the TPP looks a lot like the group of folks who marched together during the People’s Climate March last September. There’s a reason for that: the movement for climate justice is starting to build critical bridges to other movements for justice.

Today, that coalition showed that organized people can still beat lots of organized money. Because of thousands of climate activists and 350 local groups across the country who stood up and linked arms with fellow progressives, the TPP is on the ropes.

The TPP is an example of the wealthiest 1% working together against the rest of us -- and the set back today is a demonstration of the power we have when the rest of us work together to fight back.

The final results of this fight are still unclear. Key aspects of the deal go up for another vote next week and we will continue to call on you for help. As always, it will be a fight -- but I think we have a shot.

Shell wins two more permits for planned Arctic drilling campaign

WASHINGTON — Shell has nabbed two more critical government approvals for its planned exploratory oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean this summer.

The latest authorizations came from the Environmental Protection Agency, which is allowing Shell to discharge wastewater from its contracted drilling rigs, the Transocean Polar Pioneer and the Noble Discoverer, into the Chukchi Sea northwest of Alaska.

The fluids that could be flow from the rigs, under the EPA’s authorization, include water-based drilling fluids, cuttings from inside the well and wastewater produced on board.

Royal Dutch Shell may be looking to exit Ukrainian shale as conditions in the region have prompted a delay

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (ADR) (NYSE:RDS.A) has delivered the latest blow to European shale, as it considers withdrawal from its last Ukrainian exploration well.

With Nadra Yuzivska as its partner, the European oil major signed a production sharing agreement (PSA) to explore the Yuzivska shale gas field, which was discovered in 2010.

However, the recent conflict between Russia and Ukraine has prompted Shell to put the project on hold for almost a year, as it has not been able to fulfill its commitments for the Yuzivska project.

Bidness Etc takes a look at the first vessel in Shell’s Arctic drilling fleet setting off for Alaska

According to oil giant Royal Dutch Shell plc (ADR) (NYSE:RDS.A) the first vessel in its Arctic drilling fleet, The Arctic Challenger, has set sail from Washington state to Alaska. The fleet intends to conduct exploration for oil and gas in the Arctic region in the summer season. Shell spokeswoman Megan Baldino informed that The Arctic Challenger had departed Bellingham for the Dutch Harbor in Unalaska off mainland Alaska, Reuters reports. There are several support vessels that will head for the Arctic region, along with drilling rigs to explore for oil in July. The drilling will take place in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.
