On a hot July day, sixteen striped bass, a horseshoe crab, and an unidentified crab were found dead on the shore of Little Pond, a salt pond in Falmouth.  There had been a harmful algal bloom.  All of the dissolved oxygen had been consumed by algae. Fish swam in and died quickly from the lack of oxygen.  The town responded swiftly with a bylaw to reduce fertilizing by 80 percent to one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet.  The fertilizer industry went to the state and the state ruled that their regs trump town rights. Falmouth people were instructed to apply five pounds of fertilizer. Fortunately for the marine life of Falmouth, the local state senator was at the time President of the Senate.  She amended a bill that exempted Falmouth, restoring the town's right to home rule when it came to lawn care. Protect Corals with Biscayne Marine Reserve Biscayne National Park is the largest marine park in the National Park System. The Park manages a portion of the only living coral reef in the continental U.S. This is the third largest barrier reef tract in the world. The coral reef is suffering from warming waters, sedimentation, and nitrogen (nutrient) pollution. Boat strikes, anchoring and overfishing also harm coral reefs. Recognizing the dire condition of coral reefs, the NPS has completed the General Management Plan that calls for creation of Biscayne Marine Reserve to protect 30% of the coral reef within the park.  The Biscayne Marine Reserve would close only 6% of the entire park to fishing while providing more spectacular coral reef experiences for everyone else. "Although the marine reserve only covers a small portion of the park, it will have a big impact on the health of Biscayne," said Caroline McLaughlin, Biscayne program analyst for the National Parks Conservation Association. With smashed Crab and Sea Urchin still containing their meat and innards. I saw two heavily mangled balls of Crab creels during a dive here. The ridges had been physically altered since my last visit, four years ago. They were lower and the boulders which comprised them had been extensively scattered. The Kelp which had been on top of the ridges was lying, torn and limp on the seabed around the boulders. Scallops were in some cases fatally injured with chunks of shell and skirt torn out and in others completely smashed. It was heartbreaking. Oil re-entered a bear market yesterday as the price for Brent Crude, the international benchmark, recorded its largest one-day loss since February.

On Monday, the oil price fell by six per cent and it has continued to dwindle, reaching $55.40 a barrel at around 8am BST today. The price of Brent has now fallen by more than a fifth since it hit a year-high of $69.63 a barrel in May. Bear markets are commonly defined as occurring when prices fall 20 per cent from their peak.

So what is causing the slide?

ExxonMobil, the world’s biggest oil company, knew as early as 1981 of climate change – seven years before it became a public issue, according to a newly discovered email from one of the firm’s own scientists. Despite this the firm spent millions over the next 27 years to promote climate denial.
