The Democratic Presidential Debate’s Big Winner Was… Posted: 14 Oct 2015 09:36 AM PDT By Doug Porter  The consensus view as expressed in the mainstream media I read this morning was Hillary Clinton as “winner” of the October 13th Democratic Presidential debate, hosted by CNN.  Not so fast... There's more to this story... Polling, social media, and focus groups told a different story, hailing the performance of  Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. We’ll take a look at some of the commentary on the events of the evening. I'm happy to report the debate was informative and not boring at all. The contrast with earlier Republican contests was the most obvious takeaway. The Democratic candidates stuck to issues, passing up opportunities to create personal controversies. In Drought Conditions, the Rich Are Using Millions of Gallons of Water Posted: 14 Oct 2015 06:56 AM PDT One San Diego Household Used an Astonishing 4.6 Million Gallons By John Lawrence Hey, we're in a drought and people are being encouraged to take shorter showers and only wash their cars sparingly. But that doesn't apply to the rich. They are using millions of gallons of water and neither the state or local water districts are limiting them in any way. The water bill for a 11.8 million gallon user in Bel Air for the 12 months ending April 1 was $90,000. This guy was only charged 0.76 cents a gallon! No wonder he consumed water excessively; it was so cheap! California is in the fourth year of a water crisis, but the rich are using water as if there were no tomorrow. Mother Jones nailed the zip code data on this, although no water district would reveal their excessive users by name. Privacy trumps the public's right to know who these water gluttons are, but it's not hard to guess. They all come from exclusive neighborhoods. Take San Diego, for instance. There are 92 persons or families who have consumed more than a million gallons, mainly in La Jolla and Carmel Valley. The biggest single user in San Diego was someone who consumed 4.6 million gallons in a year. When we sent Shell home from the Arctic, we promised that it was only the beginning. Now it’s time to stop another insane Shell project: a massive expansion of explosive oil trains in the Pacific Northwest.

Shell wants to drive 100-car-long trains full of highly explosive oil through the cities and towns of the Pacific Northwest. Join us in putting an end to this stupidity.

Oil companies already ship huge quantities of Bakken crude oil through the Western USA by rail. If the name “Bakken crude” sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s been on your local news. Since 2013, ten separate oil trains have derailed, exploded or both. An oil train explosion in Quebec killed 47 people. Not only is Bakken crude the most explosive oil on Earth, but the rail cars in which it’s shipped are so flawed and outdated that the head of the Federal Railroad Administration likened them to a Ford Pinto.

And now Shell wants to expand oil-by-rail operations even further, building a brand-new facility at its existing refinery in Anacortes, WA specifically to receive mile-long trains full of Bakken crude.

Even more exploding trains over our waterways and through our cities? sHell No. Take action and make your voice heard.

The thing is: we don’t want the oil, we don’t need the oil, and the oil isn’t even for us.America’s decreasing demand for oil means that Shell either exports this oil to Asia or goes out of business. I know which result I’d prefer.

These trains travel right through the center of Seattle and other densely populated areas. They pass by schools and cross two decrepit bridges that span a river and an aquatic reserve in the Puget Sound. With Shell’s safety record, this is multiple disasters just waiting to happen.

Together we sent Shell packing from the Arctic. By stopping this expansion, we’ll send them a loud and clear message: we’re breaking America’s addiction to oil. Right now.

We’re winning, and we’ll keep winning. Take action against this dangerous project today.

Sanders campaign reports bringing in $1.4 million from Dem debate

Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign said Wednesday that it brought in just over $1.4 million from the Vermont senator's performance at the first Democratic presidential debate the night before.

The average contribution from the debate night was $31.54, the campaign said on Wednesday. The overall figure was an impressive haul, especially for one evening (by comparison, Sen. Rand Paul's presidential campaign brought in a total of $2.5 million in the entire third quarter).

On Tuesday night, the campaign sent out an email to supporters describing the influx of cash as a "fundraising bonanza."

"There were more than 37,600 individual contributions," the email on Tuesday said. It went on to say "there was about $100,000 in the five minutes after the debate ended. At the peak, there were about 10.25 contributions per second."

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton's campaign didn't immediately respond to inquiries on Wednesday about its fundraising haul after the debate.
